New Ambulatory Care Unit, Quiet Room & Garden Area at Craigavon Area Hospital, Co. Armagh

Tuesday, 13 April 2021
Location: Craigavon Area Hospital
Main Contractors: Bell Contracts
Client: Southern Health & Social Care Trust

Work on this project began at the very outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing with it very specific and significant challenges. The team were working within a very dynamic environment as the hospital reacted to ever-changing worldwide restrictions. The initial project works involved the relocation of existing services occupying the space required.

In spite of these challenges our dedicated team delivered the finished project 8 weeks ahead of schedule. A key consideration for the team was minimising any potential disruption to the existing hospital services within the busiest section of Craigavon Area Hospital.

The new unit is adjacent to the main hospital entrance, close to the existing emergency department.

The Ambulatory Care Unit (sometimes called ACU) is a new service, which offers same day care to patients at the hospital. This means that patients are assessed, diagnosed, treated and are able to go home the same day, without being admitted into hospital overnight. The aim is to provide a better overall experience for patients.
